Roots need air as well as water. Drainage holes let extra water escape.
Tips
- Use pots with drainage holes
- Use a decorative outer pot if you like, and empty it after watering
- Terracotta dries faster; plastic and glazed pots stay moist longer
- Gravel at the bottom doesn't improve drainage
