Light is the biggest factor in whether a houseplant thrives. Check yours before you buy.
Rough guide
- Bright direct: sun shines on the spot for several hours, often near south or west windows
- Bright indirect: lots of light but no direct sun on the leaves, a few feet from a sunny window
- Medium: near an east or north window, or farther back from a bright one
- Low: far from windows; few plants truly thrive here
Quick test
At midday, hold your hand a foot above the spot. A sharp shadow means bright light; a soft one means medium; barely any shadow means low.
