Hi there,
This month's tip: the finger test
Before you water, push a finger into the soil up to the first knuckle. If it's dry, water slowly until it drains out the bottom. If it's still damp, wait a few days. That one habit prevents most overwatering, the most common way houseplants die.

An easy plant to try
The spider plant: happy in bright indirect light, forgiving about watering, and on the ASPCA's list of plants non-toxic to cats and dogs.
Reader question
"There are tiny flies around my plants. What are they?" Probably fungus gnats, which love wet soil. Let the top of the soil dry out more between waterings. See Common houseplant pests.
